Marisa Peer - Hypnotherapist
Natalie was cutting my hair at John Frieda's. I was in that Bruce Springsteen " I want to change my clothes, my hair, my face" kind of mood, which is probably why I started reading a feature on weight loss by hypnotherapist Marisa Peer.
According to the feature, Peer believes it has been scientifically proven that we can talk to the cells in our bodies and use the power of our minds to speed up metabolic rates.
So it was that, a week later, I found myself prostrate on her couch in West London. First came the theory. "It's essential to understand how the mind controls the body," said Peer, a beautiful extremely thin lady who must have been a model before taking up the battle of other peoples bulges through hypnotherapy. "And then to control your mind. When it comes to weight most people try to control it, rather than their mind. Controlling weight by dieting just can't work."
The first step in Peer's programme, which can be followed on her tape Health from Within, is to examine your current belief systems. Do you believe, for example that you must lose weight? If so, you have to stop using the word "lose" because it is a word associated with pain. The brain subconsciously wants to regain anything that it has lost, including weight. Thus if you manage to lose weight your mind will simply go all out to redress the sense of loss and gain back the pounds.
Theory over it was down to the real thing. Peer hypnotised me in what seemed like a matter on minutes, taking me into the usually untapped world of the subconscious, where she had a field day reprogramming my brain to believe that I really could be leaner, fitter, slimmer. That could eat as nature intended - when hungry rather than when a glistening piece of chocolate wrapping stimulates my gastric juices. And, above all, that I could stop once full.
Has it worked? The honest answer is: I think so. I've been listening to her tape which, apart from anything else is a great sleep inducer. I clamp on my walkman and am out like a light. And, in the morning, I could swear my skirts are looser.
